First News: There is already a Junior World Champion in F2D Combat. Yesterday Andrea told me in the late evening that Picardo Cesar from Spain is the new Juniopr Champion. Our congratulations!

Then the showdown started: Will the margin of Richard Kornmeier be large enogh to become a junior finalist? This was foreseen for the late afternoon with the three best of the juniors. After Robert Gruber, USA, had a better second round and was in front of Richard it was really tight. Richard had a beatiful flight then, but 2820.5 points were not enough for a better ranking. So it was the part of the concurrence now. The Italinan junior Gabriel Laghi did really well, but then the worst case happens for him: When rolling after landing the left wheel fall off! The rules are hard but unambiguous: jettisoning meas a disqualification, a painful experience for Juniors. At least we were worried about Anton Strakhov, RUS, could change the ranking. He was able to, demons- trated this with a nice flight and so rise the tension of the whole german team. From the data processing computer then Susi told the numbers: with 6 points ahed of rank four Richard got the chance of the final together with Robert Gruber, USA, and Wen Li, CHI .

In the mean time the Basic-Carrier-Deck flying went on. Holger and Andreas Suchi took part in from our club. Unfortunately the final results were not published before copy deadline.

And of coure there was an other World Recordagain: The F2C team Thierry Ougen / Roland Surugue, FRA, achieved this by flying 3:09.8 min and could beat their own record from the day before. Let's see what other records will be beaten here, the weather is an optimum there for.

In general the level of F2C is really high: despite of the World-Record team it was not clear up to the last race of the semis who will be in the Final.

We were also anxious about Uwe Degner. Ranking 13th after his second flight there were 5 pilots to potentially beat him off the final. It took the whole afternoon and the german team was cheering after each score below Uwe. Susi just told us that only 2 were left now, Uwe currently 14th. Then, finally, at 15:26pm it was clear: Uwe is off the final by only 15 points below rank 15.

We got tired more and more, no wonder at a mammouth event like this. Up to now we handled about 900 score sheets, took over 1000 photos and processed about 400 of them. We didn't count the beers drunken but it is hard work, too. After a short break here comes the second part of this important day:

The third round in F2A speed is like Poker: In the morning nobody wanted to fly, everybody was expecting better weather in the afternoon and many took their second attempt. Therefor we did wait for nothing for a possibility to get the firest picture from a new World Champion. But in the afternoon it was hit by hit: Rene Birnstein achieved 279.9km/h as junior and took rank 1 for 16 minutes until Matthew Hart (GBR) could beat him and after this Hugh Simons from Australia coudld do a 286,1 km/h flight. Anyway, a really good result for Rene, supported by his father of course.

In the afternoon the second team racing semifinals took place. Not before the last heat the finalists were determined: The final will be held with the teams Thierry Ougen/Roland Surugue (FRA), Yuri Shabashov/Serguei Moskalev (RUS) and Yuriy Bondarenko/Semen Lerner (UKR).

And in the early evening then the show down for the german team: the final flight of the F2B juniors. Three flights for each of the three best and after this the result was fixed: Junior World Champion in F2B aerobatics of the year 2002 is Li Weng from China ahead of Rob Gruber, USA, and Richard Kornmeier, Germany. Our congratulations to all of them, but especially to Richard Kornmeier, who was rewarden this way for his immense amount of practice during the last year!

So, now the penultimate uploading to the Internet for this W/C!

Yours Matthias
